The tricky trend of rocking socks with sandals shows no sign of abating. Who knew? Well Miuccia Prada for one. Mind you as a fashion design leader, the Prada matriarch sets trends, she doesn’t follow them. So here we are, three years down the track from when this seemingly weird trend took off. Of course, those who favour wearing Birkenstocks were ahead of the sandal-with-sock wearing trend years ago, weren’t they? Achem…enough said. So here’s how you’ll be rocking socks with sandals like a pro this season.

As we settle in to autumn and with winter on our doorstep, there’s no need to put away your summer sandals. Just add socks. A tricky trend to be sure, but not insurmountable. Particularly given there are very few rules, if any, that apply to rocking this look. As your confidence builds, I’m sure you’ll start getting more adventurous.

Have a look in your shoe-robe and pick out the shoes you’d like to continue to wear over the cooler seasons. This trend isn’t just for sandals; pumps you’d normally only wear in warmer weather might fit the bill too.

The sock thickness will also play a role in your decision-making. There’s not point squeezing your feet into a shoe that usually fits perfectly, just to wear thick socks.

This is the perfect time to buy shoes on sale, summer shoes that would normally be too big, so you CAN plan to wear them with thicker socks.

Look stylish, keeps warm.
For the novice sandal-with-sock wearer, a monochromatic look may be a good start. Whatever colour you wear, keep everything in the same colour family. It’s easiest to start with black. Black skirt with black heels or pumps with black ankle socks. Or soft socks pushed right down to the ankle.

White on white is a great look for day, or any other colour on colour.

But also, white & black, technically two non-colours together, and very stylish.

Peruse the sock section of your local department store. Maybe you like sparkly, lurex socks. These socks can look fabulous in the evening with gold or silver strappy sandals, or back pumps.

Transparent socks with sandals can also look very stylish in the evening, as seen at Sonia Rykiel’s show this season.

Missing school? Striped socks in bold hues paired with striped pumps and skinny jeans looks playful, almost like a school girl. Or try socks with ruffles on a pump with folded up skinny or boyfriend jeans. Ruffle socks are right on trend this season.

No-one doubts the fashion credentials of SJP and she was recently snapped rocking this trend in her local neighbourhood. Nothing beats comfort when you’re hell bent on shopping and don’t use a car.

Mismatched socks and sandals can be pulled together by carrying a handbag or other fashion accessory in a colour matched to your socks. This connection stops you from looking like you got dressed in the dark.

Be bold. Match bold printed socks and bold patterned shoes. Confidence is the key. If you wear this look you have to walk and act as though you know exactly what you are doing. You OWN this look! Now go forth and be prepared to be fabulously fashionable.

One look I do love, while we are on the subject, is over-the-knee socks. Miu Miu rocked it out of the park this season with orange, lace-up boots paired with a soft skirt. Over-the-knee socks can be worn with boots, pumps or sandals and look very chic, very mod, very on-trend.

Black over-the-knee socks play nice with black, navy, burgundy (most dark wine tones, in fact, gray, tartan, mustard, and more black.

Ankle boots are another firm favourite of mine season after season, I adore them! Shoes cheekily peeking out from the top of ankle boots is a look of which I never seem to tire. Sigh.
